Dear Kids Helping Kids Community,
May 1 is the day when we at Kids Helping Kids normally send out our annual instructions for Lemonaide Day — gearing up lots of Alexandria kids to sell Lemonaide to support kids in need in our community.
This year, due to the need to keep social distancing, we will not be able to sell lemonade to our friends and neighbors, but we can still come together as a community to help local kids.
We have been in touch with the nonprofits that KHK supports to find out what we might be able to do during this time. Here are some ways KHK sponsors and lemonade stand hosts can help local kids this year:
(1) PUT TOGETHER AN EMERGENCY FOOD BASKET OR BOX.
Alexandria’s social workers are still hard at work. When they go on house calls, they are discovering that too many households with children have no food in the house. Although they can link families to public food assistance, they like to be able to provide families with emergency food baskets on the spot. KHK kids can help by creating emergency food baskets containing non-perishable foods and easy-to-prepare meals for families in need. Need ideas for what to include? Click here!
(2) MAKE A CARD FOR A GRADUATE.
Did you know that less than 60% of foster children nationwide graduate from high school by age 18? This year, the Fund for Alexandria’s Child is supporting ten foster children who are seniors graduating from high school, which is a huge achievement. Of course, this year, graduation ceremonies will not be the same, so the Fund is doing everything it can to celebrate the graduates. KHK kids can help by making a homemade card to congratulate one or more of these ten graduates.
(3) MAKE AN ACTIVITY BASKET OR BOX FOR KIDS AT HOME.
All Alexandria kids are home right now, but many families don’t have the resources to provide kids with enriching activities to fill the time. Several of our nonprofits have heard from kids that they need things to do! KHK kids can help by creating activity baskets or boxes such as baking kits, family game night kits, or art kits. Need ideas for your activity basket? Click here!
(4) DONATE MONEY OR GIFT CARDS.
We have already raised over $4000 from our business and family sponsors, and our nonprofit partners are making the most of these valuable donations, providing local kids with food assistance, rent assistance, educational assistance, enriching opportunities, and other support as needed. KHK sponsors and families can help by donating money or grocery gift cards to provide food and supplies to Alexandria kids. THANK YOU to those who have already donated!
We know that not everyone is in a position to participate this year, but if you would like to participate in KHK’s efforts to support local kids, please mail your check and/or donation to 222 N Royal St, Alexandria, VA 22314, or feel free to drop off directly on our doorstep. We will be accepting donations throughout the month of May.
You may know that KHK was founded 19 years ago in 2002 in the days following the tragedy of September 11th. At that time, many children in the United States set up lemonade stands to raise money for relief foundations. In Alexandria, these lemonade stands served as an inspiration for KHK. Since then, we have raised over $215,000 for nonprofits that help local kids and we have helped kids learn how they can help their own communities. In that spirit, we would love it if you joined us from home and helped Alexandria kids during the current crisis.
As always, If you would like to learn more about Kids Helping Kids and Lemonaide, please go to our website at www.khkalexandria.org or contact us at email@example.com or by phone at (703) 549-9693.
